The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Position summary
The laboratory of Dr Jean-Pierre Routy, physician and researcher, is seeking a highly motivated Lab Technician. The successful candidate will work primarily on research projects focusing on inflammation and gut mucosa in people living with HIV. The research will involve processing clinical samples from people living with HIV (blood, stools, tissues) or COVID-19, performing validated assays, while ensuring the function of the lab.

General Duties of the candidate:

Work on clinical samples (blood, stools, tissues) from people living with HIV or COVID-19 in an adequately secured environment.

  • Processes samples collected by the clinical team.
  • Participates in the execution of laboratory projects and experiments. Performs a variety of tasks according to established methodology in fields such as immunology (ELISA, Flow cytometry), cellular biology (cell culture), microbiology and molecular biology (RNA and DNA extraction, RTqPCR), histology and microscopy.
  • Prepares and sets up materials and equipment.
  • Records results, performs calculations and compiles data. Maintains records and files.
  • Ensures the cleanliness and safety of the work area.
  • Uses a variety of equipment such as pipettors, laminar flow hoods, incubators, autoclaves, microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, thermocycler, computers and audio-visual equipment.
  • Assists the team with manuscript preparation and editing.

  • Technical (CEGEP) or Bachelors’ degree required, in Research lab technology or sciences
  • 1 to 3 years previous laboratory technician experience, preferentially in immunology and/or microbiology
  • Bilingual French and English;
  • Strong laboratory/clinical regulatory knowledge including GLP/GCP;
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Web applications;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Problem-solving skills;
  • Planning/organizational skills
  • Ability to work well with co-workers, peers, and have a positive demeanor;

Must be professional, possess a high degree of efficiency and self-motivation, and have a strong work ethic and respect of confidentiality.


Status: Full-time, One-year renewable contract
Pay Scale: Commensurate to qualifications and experience (35-hour workweek)
Work Shift:  8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays to Fridays
Work Site: MUHC Glen site (1001 Decarie Blvd, Montreal)
